Mira Road summers and monsoons are tough on collars and underarms. Yellow marks come from sweat mixing with deodorant and building up in the fabric, which is why they get worse over time.
Why underarms turn yellow
Sweat itself is mostly clear. The yellowing comes from proteins in sweat combining with aluminium in many antiperspirants, then baking in with heat from the iron or the sun. Fresh stains are far easier to remove than old ones.
Treat the stain early
- Rinse the area in cool water as soon as you can.
- Rub a little liquid detergent into the mark and leave for 20 to 30 minutes.
- Wash on the warmest setting the label allows.
- Check before drying. Heat sets stains that are still there.
For stubborn marks on white cotton
A paste of baking soda and water, left for 30 minutes before washing, can lift mild buildup. Test on a hidden seam first. Do not use chlorine bleach on yellow sweat stains, as it can make them look worse and weaken the fabric.
Prevent it
- Let deodorant dry fully before putting on a shirt.
- Wash shirts after each wear in humid weather.
- Do not leave damp shirts in a laundry basket overnight.
When to bring it to us
Silk, linen and structured shirts, or marks that have survived two washes, should be shown to a professional. Tell us it is a sweat stain and how old it is so the right process is chosen.
Frequently asked questions
Can yellow underarm stains be removed completely?
Fresh and moderate stains usually come out with early treatment. Very old, heat-set stains may lighten but not fully disappear.
Does bleach remove sweat stains?
Chlorine bleach often makes sweat stains look worse and damages fabric. Use an oxygen-based approach or ask a professional instead.
