How to Care for Sarees and Lehengas: Cleaning and Storage Guide

By the Freshfolds team · Published 2026-10-08 · 6 min read

Sarees and lehengas can last decades if they are cleaned and stored properly, and fall apart in a few seasons if they are not. Here is what actually matters.

Know the fabric

Cotton and handloom are usually gentle-washable. Silk and silk blends, georgette and chiffon are safer dry cleaned. Anything with zari, stones or sequins should be dry cleaned, because heat and rubbing loosen the work.

Clean before you store

Perspiration and perfume stay in the fibres and slowly weaken them. They also attract moths. Dry clean silk and festive pieces after wearing, before they go back into the cupboard.

Fold and store smartly

  • Wrap in soft cotton or muslin. Avoid plastic bags, which trap moisture.
  • Refold along different lines every few months so creases do not become permanent.
  • Keep zari borders from rubbing against other fabric with tissue between folds.
  • Add silica gel packets or neem leaves in the cupboard, especially through the monsoon.

Handling stains

Do not rub. Blot gently, do not use hot water on silk, and bring the saree in quickly while telling us what caused the stain. Fresh stains come out far more easily than old ones.

Lehengas specifically

Heavy lehengas should not hang on a hanger for long, because the weight stretches the waist and distorts the work. Fold them flat with tissue between layers. For more on festive outfits see wedding and festive outfit care.
