How to Wash a Quilt, Razai or Blanket: Home vs Professional

By the Freshfolds team · Published 2026-10-08 · 6 min read

Heavy bedding is the hardest laundry in a flat. It does not fit most machines, takes days to dry and can go lumpy or sour if it stays damp inside.

Check the filling and label

Polyester-filled blankets and quilts are usually washable. Cotton-filled razai, wool and heavily quilted pieces often shift, clump or take days to dry, so they are better handled professionally.

If you wash at home

  • Only use a machine with enough capacity. Overstuffing damages both the machine and the quilt.
  • Use a gentle cycle and mild detergent.
  • Run an extra rinse to clear detergent.

The drying problem

The inside must dry completely. Drying in humid weather without enough sun or airflow can lead to a musty smell. Turn the item and shake it out often, and avoid folding or storing it until bone dry.

Why many people send it out

Large blankets and quilts are bulky and slow to dry at home. A professional wash and dry removes the damp step. See our rates for blankets and quilts.

How often

Wash blankets and quilts once or twice a year, and use a duvet or blanket cover that you wash more often.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wash a cotton razai at home?

It is difficult. Cotton filling is heavy when wet, slow to dry and can clump, so professional cleaning is usually better.

How often should a quilt be washed?

Once or twice a year, with a washable cover in between.
