What to Check Before You Hand Over Clothes for Cleaning

By the Freshfolds team · Published 2026-10-08 · 4 min read

A two-minute check before you hand clothes over prevents lost items, surprise marks and misunderstandings.

Empty every pocket

Pens leak ink, tissues shred and coins damage machines. Check shirt, trouser and jacket pockets, including inside pockets.

Point out stains

Tell the person at the counter what the stain is and how old it is. It helps choose the right treatment. Mention anything you have already tried.

Note damage and loose parts

Mention loose buttons, torn seams, broken zips and missing beads. It avoids arguments later and lets the shop handle the item with care.

Share special instructions

Say if a garment is delicate, new, heavily embellished or colour-fast uncertain. Mention items that should be dry cleaned only.

Count and note items

Know how many pieces you are handing over and keep your receipt. Check the count on collection.

Keep valuables out

Remove brooches, detachable jewellery and anything irreplaceable from clothes before handing them in.
