How to Care for School Uniforms: Whites, Stains and Pleats

By the Freshfolds team · Published 2026-10-08 · 4 min read

School uniforms get washed more than any other clothing. A little method keeps whites bright and fabric from wearing out early.

Wash by colour

Wash whites and light shirts separately from coloured trousers, skirts and pinafores to avoid greying and colour transfer.

Keep whites white

  • Pre-treat collars and cuffs with detergent before the wash.
  • Do not overload the machine, so detergent can rinse out.
  • Dry whites in sun when possible.

Mud, ink and food stains

Let mud dry, brush it off, then wash. Treat ink with rubbing alcohol on a pad. See our stain guide.

Pleats, ties and blazers

Iron pleats while damp, from the waist down. Wash ties by hand or dry clean them. School blazers are best dry cleaned.

Plan for the term

Keep two sets in rotation so each uniform gets enough drying time, especially in the monsoon.

Frequently asked questions

How do I keep a white school shirt white?

Pre-treat collars and cuffs, wash whites separately, avoid overloading and dry in sun when you can.

Should school blazers be dry cleaned?

Yes, usually. Structured blazers keep their shape better when dry cleaned.
