Shoes are made from very different materials, and the method that revives canvas can ruin suede. Here is the safe approach for each.
Canvas and sports shoes
- Remove laces and insoles and wash them separately.
- Brush off loose dirt with a soft brush.
- Scrub gently with mild soap and water.
- Wipe clean and let dry in shade with paper inside. Avoid direct sun and heaters, which can yellow soles and warp glue.
Leather shoes
Wipe with a slightly damp cloth, never soak. Let them dry naturally, then apply leather conditioner or polish to restore oils. Avoid hair dryers and direct heat, which crack leather.
Suede shoes
Suede hates water. Use a suede brush to lift dirt and a suede eraser for marks. Do not soak or scrub with soap. Deep stains or water marks need professional handling.
Boots
Check the material first, since leather, suede and synthetic all behave differently. Clean the outside by material and keep the inside dry and ventilated.
