How to Store Woollens and Winter Clothes So They Stay Fresh

By the Freshfolds team · Published 2026-10-08 · 5 min read

Winter in Mumbai region is short, which means woollens spend most of the year in a cupboard. That is exactly when moths and damp do their damage.

Clean before storing

Moths are attracted to sweat, food and body oils in the fibre, not to clean wool. Dry clean or properly wash every woollen before putting it away, even if it looks clean.

Dry completely

Damp trapped in folds grows mildew in humid weather. Air each item fully in shade before packing.

Pack the right way

  • Use breathable cotton covers or boxes, not sealed plastic.
  • Fold sweaters instead of hanging, which stretches shoulders.
  • Hang jackets and coats on wide, shaped hangers.
  • Add neem leaves, cedar blocks or silica gel to the cupboard.

Check during the year

Open the cupboard on a dry, sunny day every two to three months to air things out and check for moths or damp smell.

Blankets and quilts

Heavy bedding is best cleaned professionally before storage. See our quilt and blanket guide.
