Mira Road's monsoon is humid and long. Clothes that take hours to dry in summer take days in July, and a damp cupboard can turn fresh laundry musty. Here is how to cope.
Never store anything damp
Even slightly damp clothes will smell musty in a closed cupboard and can develop mould spots. Make sure everything is bone dry before folding and storing.
Drying when there is no sun
- Use a fan pointed at the clothes. Moving air matters as much as heat.
- Do not crowd the rack; spread items so air passes between them.
- Wring or spin well before hanging. Less water means faster drying.
- Finish nearly dry items with an iron to drive out the last of the moisture.
Fixing a musty smell
Rewash with detergent and add a cup of white vinegar to the rinse for washable cotton, then dry completely. For items you cannot wash at home, bring them to us.
Shoes in the rain
Remove insoles, stuff wet shoes with paper, and dry them in a ventilated spot away from direct heat, which can crack leather and warp soles. Never put damp shoes away in a box. See our shoe cleaning guide.
Bedding and curtains
Heavy bedding is the hardest to dry in a monsoon flat. Leave it to us and avoid the damp, musty result. See bedsheet, blanket and quilt cleaning.
Protect the cupboard
Silica gel packs, neem leaves or camphor in the wardrobe absorb moisture and discourage pests. Leave a little space between hung clothes so air can move.
Frequently asked questions
Why do my clothes smell musty after washing in monsoon?
Slow drying lets bacteria and mildew grow in damp fabric. Dry clothes quickly with a fan, spin them well, and never store them damp.
How can I dry clothes faster during the rains?
Spin or wring well, hang with space between items, use a fan, and finish with an iron where the fabric allows.
